What is Google AI Overview?

Google's AI-generated answer shown above the classic blue links, with its own set of cited sources.

What Google AI Overviews are

AI Overviews are the generated answers Google now surfaces above the classic ten-blue-links results page for many queries. A Gemini model synthesises the answer from Google's live search index, cites a small number of sources inline, and shows a set of source cards alongside. On mobile and increasingly on desktop, the AI Overview is what a searcher reads first.

AI Overviews replaced the earlier Search Generative Experience (SGE) label when Google promoted the feature out of Labs in 2024. AI Mode (the standalone conversational tab launched in 2025) uses the same grounding pipeline, so the citation dynamics generalise across both surfaces.

How Google chooses which sources to cite

The candidate pool is Google's live search index - a page must be indexable and retrievable by Googlebot to be considered. E-E-A-T-heavy sources dominate: multiple 2025-26 studies attribute the great majority of AI Overview citations to sources Google's ranking systems already rate authoritative.

The relationship to classic organic rank is real but loose and loosening. Ahrefs' 2025 analysis of 863k keywords found only 38% of AI-Overview-cited pages ranked in the top 10 for the same query, down from 76% earlier in the year. Well-structured passages from pages ranking 11-100 now earn AI Overview citations when the passage is more extractable than the top-10 alternatives.

How to appear in AI Overviews

Be indexed and retrievable (verify in Google Search Console). Publish server-rendered HTML - Googlebot renders JavaScript, but a clean initial HTML doc improves passage extraction. Structure content answer-first with question-form headings and 2-3 sentence paragraphs, so the passage a Gemini model lifts is self-contained.

Ship Organization and Article schema with real dates and named authors. Refresh comparison, pricing, and 'best X' pages every 90 days with visible updated dates. Build entity presence (Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, sameAs). Track exposure via GSC's Web search type - AI Overview impressions and clicks now report natively.

Frequently asked questions

Is there special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google has been explicit that there is no dedicated AI Overview schema and no separate opt-in. Standard SEO, indexability, and passage-level clarity drive inclusion. Article, FAQPage, Organization, and Product schema are the same ones you would use for classic rich results.
Can I opt my site out of AI Overviews?
Google exposes controls that separate training use from search appearance. Blocking Google-Extended stops content being used to train Google's models but does not remove it from AI Overviews. Removing content from AI Overviews specifically usually requires noindex or the nosnippet directive - both of which also affect classic search visibility, so the trade-off is rarely worth it.
How do I see if my pages appear in AI Overviews?
Google Search Console reports AI Overview impressions and clicks under the Web search type. Filter by URL to see per-page exposure. For a direct read, sample your target queries in Google Search yourself on a schedule - the same sampling method Osoro GEO's rank tracker uses across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and AI Overview.
