A citation counts only when the engine actually attributes a claim to your domain - a source link in ChatGPT Search or Perplexity, a footnote in a Google AI Overview, an explicit sourced mention in the answer body. Appearing in a list of consulted sources the answer never used does not count, which is what keeps the metric defensible.
