What GEO does that SEO does not

Traditional SEO earns a rank position on a search results page. GEO earns a citation inside a generated answer - a link, a footnote, or an explicit reference to your brand - inside an AI engine's reply to a buyer's question.

The distinction matters because the two systems reward different things. Ranking rewards relevance and authority for a query and hands the reader your page. Citation rewards extractability and attributability for a claim and puts the engine's own credibility behind a sentence lifted from your page. A page can rank #1 on Google and never get cited by ChatGPT; a page that ranks nowhere in particular can get cited repeatedly.

The four signals GEO measures

AI answer engines weight four signal groups when they choose which sources to cite: Technical (can crawlers reach and parse the page), Content (is a self-contained answer available to lift), Entity (does the engine know who you are), and Trust (is the source corroborated by other sources it already trusts).

The four signals are dependent, not additive. A page an engine cannot parse never reaches the extraction stage. A page with no identifiable entity gets its claim quoted anonymously or paraphrased. How GEO work sequences

Fix parsing and extraction first, because authority signals move slowly and cannot rescue a page an engine cannot read. That usually means server-side rendering, clean HTML semantics, canonical hygiene, and schema.org markup that states article type, author, and publisher explicitly.

Then shape content for extraction: question-form headings, a self-contained answer in the first sentence under each heading, tables and lists where the answer is comparative. Then invest in entity consistency across the web (Wikidata, LinkedIn, Crunchbase, review sites, press) and in earned mentions from sources the engines already cite (Reddit, industry publications, listicles).

Is GEO the same as SEO?
No. GEO and SEO share a retrieval layer (both need indexable, crawlable content) but diverge at the point of use. SEO optimises for a ranked list of links; GEO optimises for being quoted verbatim inside a generated answer. Ranking rewards keyword coverage and authority; citation rewards extractability, entity clarity, and third-party corroboration.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Classic Google results still handle the majority of navigational and long-tail queries, and Google's AI Overviews themselves ground in the same live search index that SEO targets. Treat GEO as a discipline that runs alongside SEO with overlapping technical foundations and diverging content and off-site tactics.
